Koh Rong Island

We arrived to Sihanoukville early in the morning and it was pouring outside. Sihanoukville is where you can catch ferries and is the main gateway to the islands. At the last minute we decided to spend one night on Koh Rong. Because this was a last minute decision we didn’t have a bungalow booked. However, Cecelia (who we had met on the night bus) invited us to stay with her and we caught a ferry to Koh Rong.

Happy 🙂

We arrived to the main part of Koh Rong. There was a row of bars/restaurants, bungalows and signs for Wifi. Bob Marley and other reggae played from every restaurant and white people with backpacks and smart phones walked around.

Main part of the island

After we arrived on Koh Rong, we had to take a water taxi to our bungalow. Cecelia (without realizing it) had booked a bungalow on the opposite side of the island. Our bungalow,  Coconutbeach Bungalows turned out to be amazing. It was basically the only bungalow on that part of the island and we loved it.

Our treehouse bungalow

There was no Wifi, no hot water, the electricity shut off every night at 6:00 and I loved it! The only place to eat was at our bungalow’s restaurant and the food was awesome! I would basically eat whatever they had just caught.

Our view from our bungalow

There was a small group of other travelers and we all got along great. We decided to visit the local fishing village (about a 20 minute walk from the bungalows) and it was pretty cool to see.

Fishing Village

The fishing village was so different than where we were staying only 20 minutes away. Wood planks connected the homes to each other and some of them, (like the floating village we had previously visited) needed boats to get around. There was trash piled under the houses, dogs, pigs and happy kids! I think as a westerner, it is so easy to visit a place like this and think about how it could be changed. However, it is so important to appreciate it for what it is. Also, everyone seemed so happy so I think that tells us something.

We had such an awesome time on Koh Rong. I was sad to the island and even more sad to leave Cecelia but also excited to go to Koh Rong Samloem.
