Kurtas and Dancing

I had another amazing day in the village.  I mentioned to Shanti and the other teachers that I really wanted to attend a Nepali wedding and I asked if anyone in their village was getting married anytime soon. They exclaimed that they had a friend in another village that was getting married and that Cecile and I could attend. Cecile and I were so excited and we asked what we should wear. Shanti said she would take us to get custom made kurtas and surwals, which are the traditional Nepali attire.

Getting measured

The following morning Shanti met us at 730 am. We had to hike an hour to get to the shop and go to the tailor. Cecile and I had fun choosing matching tops and bottoms. We then went to the tailor to got measured. The entire outfit cost me less than nine USD and we were told that it would be ready in 2 days. I am very excited about getting my outfit and trying it on! It will also be perfect for India.

Shanti and I

After dinner, Shanti came to our building with a bag. She told me that she had a fancier kurtas and surwal that did not fit her and she wanted me to try it on. It was a beautiful maroon kurta with gems all over it. She said that she thought it would be better for the wedding and that she was wearing a green one similar to it. When I tried it on she gasped and looked like she was about to cry. She was so excited and happy to see me in Nepali clothing. She told me that it was her gift to me and then I almost cried.

Afterwards, we blasted music and had a dance party in our room. It was fabulous.
